Building Lifecycle Safety and Compliance

While Australia is more advanced in terms of housing measures than the UK, the imminent introduction of the UK’s Building Safety Bill is a point of interest due to its strong focus on digitisation and data.

The Building Safety Bill is a response to the Grenfell Tower disaster, which saw the London tower block rapidly enveloped in flames due to poor fire safety management and ill-advised flammable cladding on the exterior.

The Bill will introduce new legal regulators, but at its centre is the theme of digital data management across the building lifecycle. Termed the golden thread, this digitised data stretches from the construction phase through to operation and provides all the data required for safety and compliance at all stages. The required information includes the size and height of building; full material and manufacturer product information; escape and fire compartmentation information; a record of inspections / reviews / consultations; and records of maintenance and testing, with evidence of competence of those who undertook buildings works.
